Volunteers and Leads urgently needed! Can you help make Nest 2019 AMAZING?

By | Community

Hey all you lovely Nestlings! Not long now before the big event, can’t you feel it in the spring air? Let’s get excited, but before that… let’s get active!

Due to some personal crisises we’ve had folks drop out of key roles and we URGENTLY NEED YOU to help. Below is a list of ABSOLUTELY-NEEDED-TO MAKE-NEST-FANTASTIC roles. Don’t fret though, in your role you’ll have a load of fabulous and experienced peeps to back you up. So here goes;

DPW:

LIGHTING LEAD – install lighting around the site along main walkways, also decoratively light up certain areas of the site. Working with Power Lead.

STRIKE LEAD – Co-ordinate the site clean up, and make sure outside contracted items, such as skips and loos, are picked up. Co-ordinate taking items back to storage, keep and inventory or items and return borrowed items

Arts:

DECOR CO-LEAD – assist Decor lead with co-ordinating the beautification of public spaces, core infrastructure and other stuff, recruit decor volunteers and oversee them during Build. During Strike, separate reusable decor from perishables; catalogue & store for transportation. Great for someone with a creative eye who likes to improvise and ideally has some experience with rigging decor. Must be available on site for build and strike.

THE POINT LEAD – Lots of liaising, layout, events, physical structure. This would be a good role for anybody who is excited at the idea of making The Point a more interesting and well-used space – it’s a good opportunity for developing new ideas for using the space well.

You all know by now how Nest works I’m sure, WE NEED YOU! (Just think of that famous sign, with a feather boa and limited clothing, some LEDs obviously!) Please email Vols@burningnest.co.uk to get involved, you know you want to!

Thanks,
Mands & Sarah

Spring Community Meeting: London

By | Community

Our Community Meetings are a chance to find out more about Nest itself, raise any ideas or concerns you might have, or to meet fellow Nestlings before the main event! Everyone is welcome, from first timers to seasoned burners – we guarantee you a warm welcome!

We’ll be holding our Spring Community Meeting on Sunday 7th April, from 2pm – 5pm, at The Apple Tree, Mount Pleasant (in between Farringdon and Clerkenwell).

We’ll also be livestreaming the meeting, visible as ever on our Facebook Group – so if you can’t be there in person, you can be there in spirit. Awwwww <3

Nest 2018 Financial Report

By | Community

The spirit of open, honest communication doesn’t just extend to the week we spend in the beautiful grounds of our Home in Devon. We also like to share exactly how every penny that makes Nest, is spent by the volunteers who make up our year-round staff.

If you’re interested in the pounds and pennies, feel free to download our Financial Report for 2018, by clicking here.

If you have any questions or feedback about this report, we’d love to hear it – just head over to our Contact Page!

Site Visit 17th March!

By | Community
We’re planning our Site visit for 18th March. The format will be a rendezvous at the site at a very specific time on SUNDAY 18th MARCH – pay attention… early comers will not be allowed on site. Come on hippies, if there’s one thing you’re good at, it’s doing stuff in the afternoon.

If you would like to have a little shenanigans and a stay over the night before, you will also need to let us know.  Everyone who has expressed interest in attending will be given the full details on confirmation. All are welcome, as ever!

Please register your interest via this form if you would like to come, if you would like to join on the Saturday evening and if you need a lift!

Volunteer Positions Still Open!

By | Community

So we are well into 2019, and Burning Nest is just around the corner. Alas, we are still seeking some truly fabulous and hopefully competent folks to add to our core team. We are nearly there, but there are a few roles available that would make a huge difference to us.

Please take a look at the info below, and if any of them tweak your interest, drop us a line at vols@burningnest.co.uk and we will arrange for a chat and a more detailed explanation of your role;

Department of Public Works

Lighting Lead – a key part of all Nest nights,

Strike Lead – clean up duty and

Transport Lead (for equipment not people).

Arts

Decor and Signage Lead – Let your imagination run riot

Centre Camp Lead – Making sure great stuff happens there

Edge of Chaos (Ops and Legal)

Health and Safety – no further explanation needed surely!?

Burn and Events Perimeter – Safety third?

Cat Wrangling

Fluffing Co-Lead – supporting our very competent Lead to provide an outstanding Fluffing service to our hard working vols, before, during and after event.

Info Lead – A vague idea of having an info station onsite, it’s a new one, any inspiration out there?

As we’ve always said at any of our community events, although experience in the area of your interest would be a bonus, enthusiasm and capability are definitely more important. So if you think you may not be right for something but it really floats your boat, drop us a line and we can chat to you about it, crazier things have happened!

Don’t forget, Burning Nest is a community event, we the community make it, so don’t be shy, get involved, it takes a village to put this shizzle together, there’s a space for everyone.

Drop us a line; vols@burningnest.co.uk

cheers m’dears

Nest 2019: We need volunteers!

By | Community

For those that attended one of the many Decom events in London recently, I hope you had a fab time, connected with both old and new friends, had a shed load of fun and managed to decompress. During Daycom Amanda (Lead Cat Wrangler), Iona (Lead Community Ambassador) and Radiant (Lead Ranger) gave a short chat about Nest to a group of experienced and virginal burners.

We had a lot of feedback about how many of you though 2018 was our best Nest yet (and as of course we had constructive stuff that we are working on too, but lets focus on the fluffy stuff here!). For the core team, we work on Nest though out the year, starting with just a few hours a month and building to …well… whatever you have time for! Many of the core team have kindly (nuttily) agreed to take on the roles they had last year, however we want to ensure we are giving other community members the opportunity to get involved too, so we think its important to bring in co-leads for each function as a more manageable way to bring people into the organisation. The idea of co-leads is to reduce burnout and build a more capable and inclusive team, the more the merrier. If we are gonna be “Burnier Than Thou”, lets also not forget about the brownie points you’d be getting for some of our principles;

participation, self-reliance, communal effort, civic responsibility and hopefully a bit of self expression too.

The lead roles we are really keen to find some lovely peeps for asap are;

Arts; lots of help needed here; Decor Lead, Art Project & Grants lead
Community; Ambassador Co Lead
Tech; Co Lead (with design experience)
Cat Wrangling; (Volunteering) Co Lead
Rangering: Co Lead

We would also love some folks that would love to turn both the gate and our fluffing experience into a really wowing experience, what do you think would be amazing and how would you do it? Crazier the better!

As you can see there is a real diversity of roles. So if you think now is the time you wanna step up and give a bit more back to the community, please email vols@burningnest.co.uk. We can have a chat about what you’d like to do and we can point you in the right direction.

Nest is only as good as the effort we ALL put into it, so come on and show us how fab you are!

Community meeting and Early bird memberships

By | Community, Tickets

Hello, hello!

And welcome to this fortnight’s Nest News! Well, after the excitement of last Nest News, I bet you’re all worried that this one will be a damp squib when you’ve had fireworks all week.

But sit tight my fluffy darlings, because there’s plenty of the good stuff for you right here!

Contents for this week:

Community Meeting: You, and me, and everybody

As we always say – Nest is run and created by its participants. Participation from all of you sexy beasts is absolutely KEY to Nest being as amazing as it is, and making it better than ever.

So between that and the fact that we miss all your faces, we’ve scheduled an essential Community Meeting! Whoop! Deets as follows…

When?

Sunday 10 December
14:00.  (That’s 2 of the clock in the PM!)

Where?

Living Space, Waterloo
1 Coral St, Lambeth, London SE1 7BE

Get there nice and early, hippies, because there’s a lot to get through. And then afterwards, we can have gin. Hoorah!

Profiling

This can only be your friendly announcement that you will be able to register your Nest Profile from 13 November. Oooohhhhh!

That can only mean one thing…

Cheap, cheap, cheap – said the Super Early Bird!

In case you’ve forgotten (and if you have, how very dare you?!) Super Early Bird memberships are open for purchase on 12:00 GMT – 24 November! That’s right – just after pay day. How convenient!!!

Put it in your diary NOW!

Our New Facebook group

We’ve realised it’s actually quite difficult for Nestlings to navigate needs, requests and interactions on our Facebook Page, so we have set up a Burning Nest Community Group on Facebook, where you can share stories and talk about how wonderful we all are. Awwwhhh.

Please remember that we all ascribe to the Nest principles and we are guided by them in our interactions with each other, including those online. Inclusion, civic responsibility and gifting are as important as self expression.

There will be some guidelines coming out for you all to reference if you’re wondering and should you ever be puzzled.

Right, that’s your lot. I’m off to make new wings for Decom… oh yes DECOM! And AfterParty!! Much excite!! I’ll be there with a good few of the Core Team. We’ll be in attendance at the chat on Participation at midnight (you know how we feel about Participation!) and we’d love to see you – come and get a consensual hug!

If you’re not Decomming we’ll be at Burning Pub on the following Thursday. And the Community Meeting after that… bloomin’ ‘eck you’re going to be sick of the sight of us by Christmas!

Lots and lots of love,
Siren

Nest 2018 – Here we go!

By | Community

Whaaattt? Already?!

Darling Nestlings

Oh how we’ve missed you all.  We can’t believe it’s been almost six months since our amazing week in Cornwall! But that can only mean one thing… we are six months closer to when we do it all over again!

Contents for today’s message:

Talk to us

Communications – you want them to start earlier and be more joined up. No problem. They start now. You’re reading it!

You can actually help us with this: if there’s a Nestling – be they past, present or future – who isn’t on the mailing list, get them to sign up so they don’t miss out. Simples! Which brings us nicely to….

You also want all the info in one place – we agree. So a beautiful, easy to navigate, brand spanking new website is on its way. It will be updated regularly and contain all the answers to burning questions you have including things like theme camps and grant funding, as well as Nest policies in areas like safeguarding, generators, drones, and water supply, to name but a few.

Sign me UP!

YES – you want us to make it easier for you to sign up to volunteer. YES – we are so keen to get you all on board ASAP. So, we’re kicking this off NOW. We’re recruiting across all areas of volunteering so if you fancy Rangering, Welfare, Leave No Trace – get ahead and get involved now by emailing the Volunteer Team.

There is also still space on our Core Team for new community members interested to spearhead elements of event logistics, administration, community outreach and the arts. What are you waiting for?!

Site update

We appreciate people weren’t happy about us withholding the location. We hear you. There were a couple of very good reasons for this.

Mainly we knew that Boconnoc wasn’t going to be our Forever Home, so we had be cautious to protect the venue from any impact. We’re also keen to protect you all when you’re there and want to make sure we avoid gatecrashers at a new site.

And there it is, as above, sadly Boconnoc was only ever a stepping stone for our lovely community. Finding that magickal, special place for our Nest to permanently reside, has been a key objective for the Core team over the last two years and we’ve been looking for somewhere permanent – like our sister events Microburn and AfrikaBurn have secured. But these things do take time. We really appreciate your patience and support.

We’re very excited about feathering our new site and there will be a big announcement very soon when we have the final agreement in place. The eyes are being dotted and the tees crossed, even now as you read… or should that be the tees dotted and the eyes crossed…? Can never remember…

Onwards, HO!

So here we are on our way to Burning Nest 2018! There’s going to be more awesome news coming, but the best news so far is that….

… EARLY BIRD MEMBERSHIP FOR 2018 OPENS SOON!! Stay tuned, Nestlings, as Membership sales for you Super Early Birds will launch in a mere few weeks time. More information on prices, low income and family memberships is to follow in the coming weeks. Get your reddies at the ready!

Any questions, thoughts, appreciation, propositions (of any nature…! ARF!), head over to the Facebook Page in the first instance… OR – much excite – you can now email yours truly, the Comptesse du Comms, your straight talking, ever loving in her own squawky, hypnotically tuneful way: Siren.

Lastly, it gives all of us in the Nest Core team such great pleasure to say:

WELCOME HOME.

Lots of hot, hot love
