Volunteers needed for build and strike!

By | Nest 2022, Volunteering | No Comments

Want to be part of the best crew at Burning Nest? Want to do something crucial for the event and give back to your community? Nest Department of Public Works (DPW) needs you!

Nest is an event unlike any other. It’s not a festival, it’s a social experiment in temporary community. The Department of Public Works (DPW) is one of the cornerstones in that community, building our infrastructure and taking it down again (and having a ton of fun along the way). DPW is responsible for running power, lights, co-ordinating toilets and overseeing waste removal (via Leave A Better Trace), as well as organising Rangers and Welfare. They also create and place signage, work with the Arts team to place installations, and help with parking.

No experience needed for most roles, there’s space for everyone on the crew, as long as you have a willingness to graft, learn, can work in a team with loads of new friends in a field in the sunshine (we hope).

We have some specialist roles still to fill too: we need people urgently for Lighting, Workshop & General Build and Kitchen (aka Fluffers).

If you have any questions at all, or want to volunteer, please get in touch!

Co-lead for Welfare Enough needed!

By | Nest 2022, Volunteering | No Comments

We are searching for a co-lead to help produce Welfare Enough for Burning Nest 2022. Welfare Enough is a critical part of our event, providing support to Nestlings in need (with the full help of our on-site medic and security team) as well as helping organise Ranger shifts.

Key responsibilities

  • Liaising with, preparing and scheduling volunteers before the event via email & spreadsheets
  • Maintaining the rota before and during the event to ensure full staffing
  • Contributing to volunteer training
  • Acting as “Super” on call/on radio during 24 hour periods during the event (Meaning being largely sober every 24 hours, then taking 24 hours off. Sleeping, eating, swimming, dancing and frolicking during these periods is all well and great)
  • Supporting and debriefing volunteer sitters while acting as Super
  • Medical and ranger liaison in acute circumstances on site while acting as Super
  • Liaising with DPW and production team for build, strike and maintenance of the Welfare site while acting as Super
  • General site & volunteer herding, including stepping in for shift no-shows as needed
  • If possible, arriving on site Monday 30th May and leaving the next Monday 6th June

Skills needed

  • Experience sitting & being sat with
  • Good with rotas/admin/logistics
  • Can-do attitude
  • Committed to non-judgement as a core value
  • Open and collaborative
  • Works well in a team and event ecosystem
  • Medical, crisis or social worker, or has experience producing harm reduction or emergency services at burns or festivals a huge plus

If this sounds like you, or if you have any other questions, please get in touch!

Join the Edge of Chaos!

Edge of Chaos (Health & Safety/Licensing / Legal & ops) Needs YOU!?!

Seeking Gods/ Goddesses and general Heavenly beings of co-ordination to help keep us all legal and compliant during the Nest event this year.

Do you know your booze licensing from liability? Insurance from Indemnity? Want to help us insure an effigy burn (seriously, this IS a thing)? Fancy helping us chat to the council, medical folk and assorted ‘grown-up official type folk’ to allow us all play (safely) this Summer?

It may seem an oxymoron in multiple of multiple ways, yet we need organised burners to help us organise to disorganise!

We have an experienced Edge of Chaos team, ready to show you the ropes and pass on their knowledge – so you’ll be supported every step of the way.

If all this sounds interesting, please get in touch!

Join us at Build and Strike!

By | Nest 2020, Volunteering | No Comments

The Build and Strike teams are the handy-dandy do-it-yourself stars of each Burning Nest. They arrive before everyone else and help create our paradise, and leave after everyone has finished partying, taking the decorations down and turning the lights off.

There’s something special about these teams, and the sense of camaraderie shared by everyone is palpable. Are you good with a saw, a drill or planning decor in a large space? Do you yearn to express your inner artist through the medium of string lighting? Or do you want to provide for people who have been grafting all day, by feeding and watering them lovingly?

If any of this sounds like fun, and you are able to either arrive before the event, or stay after it’s finished (or both!), take a gander at our form, and sign up to help!

There are a couple of slightly more responsibility-heavy roles to fill too:

– ON-SITE kitchen co-ordinator for build and/or strike
– Strike Co-ordinator

If you’re planning on just turning up, please let us know so we can feed you! x

This could be you!

Volunteering for 2020!

By | Nest 2020, Volunteering | No Comments

Hello Lovelies,

This is your friendly Department of Nepotism and Coercion (formerly known as DPW), the spread sheeting has begun and we have some requests to put to the community and a shiny new sign up form for you to volunteer on the build and strike teams.

TOOLS YOU SAY?

This year we would love to start building a stock of tools that will be kept and maintained by the DNC. If you have any tools that you no longer need and would be willing to donate to Nest let us know! dnc@burningnest.co.uk

WORK VEHICLE NEEDED

We will need the use of a 4×4 vehicle during build, event time and strike (18/05/20 – 3/06/20). In the past this vehicle had been rented, but we thought it would be worth reaching out to you all to see if there’s an opportunity to keep it in the community. The vehicle will be used to transport tools, materials and people and driven somewhat offroad, so only get in touch if this doesn’t strike fear into your vehicles heart.

VOLUNTEERING

We will be looking for people to volunteer in lots of different capacities for both build and strike. If you would like to volunteer to be on the build or strike team please fill in this form

If you have a particular interest in co-ordinating a team or any special skills that you think would suit a role with a little more responsibility than wielding a hammer please get in touch. dnc@burningnest.co.uk

Vacant Roles:

-Lighting Link (responsible for co-ordinating placement of lighting)

-Strike Link (responsible for co-ordinating strike team)

-Signage Link (responsible for co-ordinating all site signage)

Thank You,

DNC x

Volunteer Positions Still Open!

By | Community

So we are well into 2019, and Burning Nest is just around the corner. Alas, we are still seeking some truly fabulous and hopefully competent folks to add to our core team. We are nearly there, but there are a few roles available that would make a huge difference to us.

Please take a look at the info below, and if any of them tweak your interest, drop us a line at vols@burningnest.co.uk and we will arrange for a chat and a more detailed explanation of your role;

Department of Public Works

Lighting Lead – a key part of all Nest nights,

Strike Lead – clean up duty and

Transport Lead (for equipment not people).

Arts

Decor and Signage Lead – Let your imagination run riot

Centre Camp Lead – Making sure great stuff happens there

Edge of Chaos (Ops and Legal)

Health and Safety – no further explanation needed surely!?

Burn and Events Perimeter – Safety third?

Cat Wrangling

Fluffing Co-Lead – supporting our very competent Lead to provide an outstanding Fluffing service to our hard working vols, before, during and after event.

Info Lead – A vague idea of having an info station onsite, it’s a new one, any inspiration out there?

As we’ve always said at any of our community events, although experience in the area of your interest would be a bonus, enthusiasm and capability are definitely more important. So if you think you may not be right for something but it really floats your boat, drop us a line and we can chat to you about it, crazier things have happened!

Don’t forget, Burning Nest is a community event, we the community make it, so don’t be shy, get involved, it takes a village to put this shizzle together, there’s a space for everyone.

Drop us a line; vols@burningnest.co.uk

cheers m’dears

Nest 2019: We need volunteers!

By | Community

For those that attended one of the many Decom events in London recently, I hope you had a fab time, connected with both old and new friends, had a shed load of fun and managed to decompress. During Daycom Amanda (Lead Cat Wrangler), Iona (Lead Community Ambassador) and Radiant (Lead Ranger) gave a short chat about Nest to a group of experienced and virginal burners.

We had a lot of feedback about how many of you though 2018 was our best Nest yet (and as of course we had constructive stuff that we are working on too, but lets focus on the fluffy stuff here!). For the core team, we work on Nest though out the year, starting with just a few hours a month and building to …well… whatever you have time for! Many of the core team have kindly (nuttily) agreed to take on the roles they had last year, however we want to ensure we are giving other community members the opportunity to get involved too, so we think its important to bring in co-leads for each function as a more manageable way to bring people into the organisation. The idea of co-leads is to reduce burnout and build a more capable and inclusive team, the more the merrier. If we are gonna be “Burnier Than Thou”, lets also not forget about the brownie points you’d be getting for some of our principles;

participation, self-reliance, communal effort, civic responsibility and hopefully a bit of self expression too.

The lead roles we are really keen to find some lovely peeps for asap are;

Arts; lots of help needed here; Decor Lead, Art Project & Grants lead
Community; Ambassador Co Lead
Tech; Co Lead (with design experience)
Cat Wrangling; (Volunteering) Co Lead
Rangering: Co Lead

We would also love some folks that would love to turn both the gate and our fluffing experience into a really wowing experience, what do you think would be amazing and how would you do it? Crazier the better!

As you can see there is a real diversity of roles. So if you think now is the time you wanna step up and give a bit more back to the community, please email vols@burningnest.co.uk. We can have a chat about what you’d like to do and we can point you in the right direction.

Nest is only as good as the effort we ALL put into it, so come on and show us how fab you are!
